Q: Mercury remediation as a clean technology seems to be a huge market opportunity, especially with so many old, abandoned mine sites in the U.S., what makes the Philippine opportunity so special?
A: Thank you for the question, especially since mercury contamination is a serious legacy issue in the U.S. (for example, the Carson River Mercury Superfund) but also a current global dilemma, recently addressed by the U.N.’s Minamata Convention on Mercury (“Minamata”), with widespread artisanal mining using mercury and contaminating the landscapes and waters of so many countries.
Minamata is an international treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. Minamata was approved by close to 140 countries and named after the Japanese city Minamata, that went through a devastating incident of mercury poisoning. Minamata targets eliminating the use of mercury in industrial mining by 2020.
The Comstock has long been a region of mining innovation and science-based breakthroughs. The transportation of timber by V-flume, engineering of square-set timbers to strengthen and expand underground mining, perfecting of cyanide-based processing (and reducing deadly mercury use), and even now, a chemical-free innovation for remediating contaminating mercury from soils and rivers! The Philippine political leadership and their Department of Environment and Natural resources are demonstrating global leadership in environmental responsibility.
